John Taylor wins 2013 EPA WaterSense Partner of the Year Award

John A. Taylor, president and director of operations with Taylor Irrigation Service in Houston, Texas, became the first Texas-based irrigation designer/contractor to win the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense Partner of the Year Award when he took the 2013 award on stage at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas on Thursday October 3.

Mr. Taylor was honored during the WaterSmart Innovations Conference for his commitment to water efficiency and outstanding efforts to support the WaterSense program during 2012.  In 2012 alone, WaterSense labeled products and new homes helped Americans save more than 202 billion gallons of water, or more than the amount of water needed to supply all the homes in Colorado for a year. More than 2,700 utility, manufacturer, retail, builder, organizational, and professional partners helped WaterSense realize these accomplishments, but every year a few in particular are recognized for their significant contributions to the program.

“All of our WaterSense partners have taken steps to reduce our nation’s water use, but several stood out in 2012 for their commitment to the WaterSense program and collaborative efforts to promote WaterSense-labeled products, new homes and outreach and educational programs,” said EPA’s acting Assistant Administrator for Water Nancy Stoner. “We are pleased to honor John Taylor for his efforts that support our mission to protect the future of our nation’s water supply.”

John A. Taylor was honored as the Irrigation Partner of the Year Award winner for changing the business model of Taylor Irrigation Service by designing and installing irrigation systems that consume as much as 50% less water than traditionally installed systems.  The use of EPA WaterSense compliant design techniques and products like ET based controllers that feature the EPA WaterSense logo has helped Taylor achieve these results.

Taylor Irrigation Brings Award to Texas

John is the first Texas-based irrigation designer/contractor to receive this honor.

“I am thrilled to be recognized for our effort but the real satisfaction is the reduction of water consumption that we have achieved in the Houston market with our SmartSystem designs and installations,” said John Taylor, the president and operations manager of Taylor Irrigation Service, Inc. “This has to be the beginning though. Water is among our most precious of resources and while this award recognizes our efforts, it is not a race and we have not succeeded until we eliminate the systematic waste of water within the irrigation industry as a result of poorly designed systems using outdated technology.” Mr. Taylor went on to say, “Of all the water we consume in the United States, close to seventy percent of it is irrigation related and studies show that the average acre of irrigated landscape is over watered by more than two hundred percent. We have to change these numbers and water conservation has to start with irrigation.  The choices we make over the next few years will have consequences that reach our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

When asked about the role that his company will play in this future, John responded with, “We are just getting started.  Our goal is to change the way we look at and think about water and landscape.  That change has to be across the board with the irrigation companies, the homeowners, the water purveyors and the governing bodies that establish code and law.  Taylor Irrigation will lead that change and that means that companies like ours have to be fluid and able to adapt to these changes as they come; that is where the real value lies.  We, as irrigation contractors and consultants, have to be as sustainable as the water solutions we are creating and that sustainability is going to mean being open to change.”
